Advocacy (And Self-Advocacy)-
“The Obstacle IS the Path.” This session provides tips for families and students related to advocacy in the school setting. Participants will identify specific needs, discuss possible supports, and plan for collaborative communication and advocacy with teachers. An emphasis on self-advocacy and independence will be included.
Anxiety, Perfectionism, Underachievement-
Rates of anxiety are rapidly increasing in our communities. Students may suffer from perfectionism and imposter syndrome which affects their ability to focus and thrive. This is particularly prevalent in schools and communities built around gifted and high achieving students. This session will define these issues and the roles and responsibilities of students, parents, and educators. Audience members will leave with concrete solutions to support their students/children. And an understanding that they are not alone on the journey.
Sensory Sensitivities in High Abilities and Gifted Students-
Sensory integration are the processes in the brain that allow us to take information we receive from our five senses, organize it, and respond appropriately. Sensual overexcitability, based on the work by Polish psychologist Kazimierz Dabrowski, is defined as heightened awareness of all five senses. How do these two concepts look for gifted children and adults, who have stronger neural responses to many types of stimuli compared to non-gifted peers? This presentation includes ideas for both home and classroom use, including evaluating and adapting environment, teaching and practicing self-regulation, and how to provide physical supports/tools to support sensory integration.
(This session can be adapted for parents or educators.)
