Culturally, Linguistically, & Economically Diverse AND Gifted –
This course is designed to introduce educators to the unique characteristics and needs of gifted students from culturally and linguistically diverse populations. In addition, you will investigate teaching strategies used to develop talent, multiple pathways to gifted identification and best practices for increasing cultural competence within schools and systems. Additional topics include language acquisition (and its effect on talent development), data, culturally responsive assessment, and the role of the educator. Extended 45 hour series available here.
Culturally Responsive Teaching-
“Motivation is inseparable from culture” (Wlodkowski, 2005). As educators, we must be aware of and respond to the individual cultures that exist within our schools. This includes understanding factors that may influence students from poverty. This session will explore the district demographics and micro-cultures, as well as research based teaching strategies designed to support diverse learners and develop culturally responsive relationships with students.
Strategies for Teaching and Learning Academic Vocabulary (Language of the Discipline)-
Implementing specific lessons to building academic language increases the cognitive academic language proficiency (CALP) of ELs and students from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. This session will examine teaching strategies for introducing and practicing the language of the discipline across grade levels and content areas. Examples include semantic/word maps, visual dictionaries, sorting, games, frames/graphic organizers etc…
